Monumental Sports & Entertainment
Ted Leonsis is founder, chairman, principal partner and chief executive officer of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which owns and operates the NHL’s 2018 Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals, the 2019 WNBA Champion Washington Mystics, the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NBA G League’s Capital City Go-Go and the NBA 2K League’s Wizards District Gaming. Leonsis is a co-owner of aXiomatic, which has controlling interest in global esports franchise Team Liquid. Monumental also owns the 20,000-seat Capital One Arena and operates MedStar Capitals Iceplex, the Capitals’ training facility, and George Mason University’s EagleBank Arena.
Monumental Sports Network
An integrated media, technology, sports and entertainment company, MSE also owns Monumental Sports Network, a first-of-its-kind regional sports network for digital, mobile and over-the-top (OTT) platforms.
Entertainment & Sports Arena
As part of a joint venture with the D.C. Mayor’s Office and Events DC, MSE unveiled a brand-new sports and entertainment facility in Southeast D.C. on the St. Elizabeths East campus, which opened in the Fall of 2018. This cutting-edge 4,200-seat venue and basketball facility includes a top-of-the-line practice facility for the Wizards and serves as the Mystics and Go-Go home court.
Revolution
As co-founder and partner at Revolution Growth, a $1 billion set of investment funds, Leonsis and his partners make a select group of speed-up capital investments in businesses each year, typically investing $25-50 million per deal.
Filmmaker and Digital Entrepreneur
Mr. Leonsis is a nationally recognized entrepreneur, investor, philanthropist and award-winning filmmaker, who has won Peabody and Emmy awards.
Boards and Committees
Leonsis serves on the Board of Governors for the NBA and NHL, as well as on the Executive Committee of the NHL. He is also chairman of the NBA Media Committee.
He also serves on the boards of several public companies, American Express and Groupon; and is the former vice chairman and president of AOL.
Philanthropy
Through the Leonsis Foundation, his sports teams, the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation and his family’s personal giving, Mr. Leonsis supports hundreds of charities each year. In 2015 Mr. Leonsis was named chairman of the board of DC-CAP (District of Columbia College Access Program), which is dedicated to encouraging and enabling DC public high school students to enroll in and graduate from college.
Mr. Leonsis also co-founded and chairs the Greater Washington Partnership, which played a critical role in organizing the region’s bid process for Amazon’s HQ2. The bid was successful, which was built on cooperation between Washington, Maryland and Virginia, and offers a great blueprint for tackling economic challenges for everything from housing to transportation to workforce development.
