Trio of Sports Industry Innovators Named as New Leadership Team of Monumental Basketball

I am thrilled to share some exciting news regarding several changes taking place within our organization. Monumental Sports & Entertainment announced today the new leadership team of Monumental Basketball, a newly formed collective that includes the Washington Wizards, Washington Mystics, Capital City Go-Go and Wizards District Gaming. I am excited to introduce this trio of sports industry innovators who will head a new organizational structure for our basketball platform.

Our goal was to form a new leadership team with a forward-thinking structure to adapt to the “new NBA,” which requires every possible strategic advantage to compete and win. With this new structure, we are building a leadership brain trust with deep Wizards and NBA experience and with sports professionals from outside the NBA who will challenge our thinking and help us adapt to an ever-increasing competitive environment.

First, I am pleased to announce the promotion of Tommy Sheppard to General Manager of the Washington Wizards. As General Manager, Tommy will lead strategy, analytics, player personnel, scouting and coaching for the organization. He brings to the role a deep understanding of the team’s history along with unparalleled relationships within the NBA, as well as the international basketball community.

I am also pleased to welcome Sashi Brown and Daniel Medina to the Monumental Family. Sashi will serve as chief planning and operations officer for Monumental Basketball; while Daniel will serve as chief of athlete care & performance. Sashi is a seasoned NFL executive who has served within both football and business operations. In his new role, he will manage efforts relating to technology, finance, communications, security and player engagement for Monumental Basketball. Medina will head up medical, training, mental health, strength and conditioning, nutrition and physical therapy & recovery. Daniel comes to Washington having spent the last two seasons as the vice president of athlete care for the Philadelphia 76ers. Prior to Philadelphia, he spent over a decade with Fútbol Club Barcelona.

Mike Thibault will continue to lead all basketball activities for the Mystics as head coach and general manager; while Pops Mensah-Bonsu will continue as general manager for the Go-Go, reporting to directly to Tommy.

In addition, Monumental Sports & Entertainment is pleased to announce the promotions of two current staff. Sashia Jones, who previously served as vice president of community relations, was promoted to vice president of player engagement for Monumental Basketball. Brett Greenberg, who previously served as vice president of basketball analytics & salary cap management, was promoted to assistant general manager for strategy and analytics.

As part of our new organizational structure, we will also launch a new athlete development & engagement department, which will be led by former Georgetown Head Coach John Thompson III and Sashia Jones. JT3 and Sashia will use their vast experience to lead a team that will focus on the overall health and development of Monumental Basketball athletes, including providing development and growth opportunities in education, financial services and post-career planning.
