A lot can happen in ten years; The future comes at you fast: Here’s a fun prediction by me.

Check out this list of the world’s highest paid athletes and note the number of global superstars. Which sport has the most global scale and fastest growth? Esports.

Which sport has league ownership by corporations that are private or public and have generated enormous equity wealth creation via global consumer adoption of products and services and new business models? Esports.

As examples, Tencent, Activision, Epic Games – All of these companies are bigger than sports leagues in terms of revenues.

To young people around the world, Fortnite is their AOL Instant Messenger, their Facebook. Off the chart engagement through streaming video, social media and communications, and built-in, one-click e-commerce.

I would bet that, today, League of Legends has the most active players around world compared to football, baseball or hockey.

To many young people, Twitch is more important than ESPN. I expect one day Twitch will create pay-per-view events, not unlike boxing or MMA, but for esports.

I predict that in 10 years, there will be an esports player on this list. I also predict that player will be better known than some of today’s superstar “big four” sports players.

Look at the growth of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter over ten years. Scale happens and brands are created from unexpected places.

Best way to predict the future is to be a part of it today…and to connect the dots.
